NEW SEASON… NEW CHALLENGES

Another golf season is upon us. Superintendents and their staffs are busy finishing up projects and prepping the course for play. Golf is absolutely booming, and many area courses saw a record number of rounds in 2021. As most of the world has shifted to remote work, golfers have had more time to practice and play. This is great for golf and was a much-needed influx at every golf facility. This much needed golf boom has also come with many challenges for superintendents.

 

Labor is the biggest issue I’ve heard from those throughout the area and across the country. The ability to attract hourly seasonal workers has seemed harder than ever. There is a great deal of competition with increasing wages, and also in those willing to do labor-intensive work. On top of labor issues there are more assistant superintendent job postings than ever, with lower enrollment in turf schools. So low that some universities have removed their programs.

 

Other issues include supply chains and fuel costs. These are being seen across the country and show no signs of letting up. Fuel costs are easy to understand, but supply chain issues are affecting your local course maintenance equipment and parts. Superintendents and equipment managers are seeing price hikes and major delays in receiving replacement parts. Ordering new equipment is an option, but with no clue when there will be more production.

 

These issues are affecting many industries and are definitely impacting golf in the Met Area. Golf is booming, and many clubs are spending on capital improvements and buying new equipment. Who knows how long these issues will be around, but what I do know is all area superintendents are solving their issues and preparing for another busy season. Golf is in a great place.
